Leadership Corner: Point #1 - Mutual Respect

In my last blog post, the point was simply made that each one of us is a leader. One is either a leader of character or they are not. A leader of character treats each individual with respect regardless of title. I grew up in the leadership ranks of the military, which is unarguably the most structured organization in the United States. As a young officer candidate I would always take notes on what is the right way to treat people and the wrong way to treat people. We must simply recognize we are all human beings and the human mind is programmed to go the extra mile for people we respect.

We all know that one leader we have had at one point in our career that chooses to use the installation of fear, harsh language and/or do this because of the fear of losing your job. You know…the bully. As humans, we react to this type of leadership style and lack of respect with the mindset of “I will get the job done.” On the flip side, we all have had that leader in our career that treats us with respect and we never want to let down. We want to go the extra mile because we don’t want to “disappoint” them. This is mutual respect in a nutshell. We have respect for one another and never want to disappoint those we respect.

I do not watch much television due to my work schedule and having 4 young children, but when I find time, I enjoy catching up on old episodes of Undercover Boss. I love this show because one can clearly see the difference when someone is treated as an “Average Joe” versus being a corporate executive. I am always moved by those who treat the executive with respect, regardless of the role they are playing.

Sometimes we need to revisit what Dr. Seuss so famously said, “A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

Be the leader that treats everyone with respect, and you will build lasting relationships that together will achieve the unachievable.

Thank you for reading. I look forward to publishing my next blog on my second point on leadership.
