Every year, major league scouts across the world are looking for the next Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth. In baseball, they measure talent by analyzing 5 areas: hitting for average, hitting for power, base-running skills and speed, throwing ability, and fielding abilities.
The players who excel in all of these areas are named 5-tool players and can radically influence a major league baseball team’s performance. I was recently reading an article by Jack and Suzy Welch. Jack Welch is best known as the former Chairman and CEO of General Electric. He is widely known as one of the best leaders in the history of Corporate America. His wife, Suzy, is a very accomplished author and business journalist as well. In the article, Jack and Suzy list the five traits required of all leaders.
The first essential trait is positive energy. Regardless of how things are going in a given day leaders must always see the glass as half-full and not half empty. This trait enables the leader to serve as the beacon of enthusiasm for the company, division, or team.
The second trait is the ability to energize others to achieve far reaching goals. One must have the ability to motivate people to achieve a common objective and willing to take the hill for you.
The third trait is edge. Every leader needs to have a little edge; the ability to make tough calls even when they are uncomfortable or unpopular.
The fourth trait is the talent of execution. You know, the person that gets it done, not the person that talks about all the obstacles keeping them from completing the task.
The fifth trait is passion. A leader must be willing to dig deep, believe and genuinely care about their employees, company and clients.
The same way a major league scout evaluates talent in baseball is the same way we need to approach finding good leaders to achieve the “unachievable.” I want to wish all the best to you in finding your next 5-tool leader. Building a team of individuals who operate with these traits will inevitably take your company or team to the next level.
