We all love the 4th of July! A sizzling BBQ, ice-cold lemonade, parties around the neighborhood, and a day off work for most of us. As we all gear up to celebrate one of America’s favorite holidays, keep in mind a few tips for your homeowner’s association that can make the holiday even better:

1.  Check with your Homeowner’s Association

Check to see if there are any organized social events within the neighborhood. Association BBQs, pool parties, and other outdoor events are a great way to socialize with your community and to meet some new friends. If you are unsure if there are any events in your neighborhood, call your community association manager to check about your HOA.

2.  Respect Your Neighbors and Keep Track of Time

Depending on which day the 4th falls on, some people in your community will have to get up early for work the following day. For that reason, it's important to be especially mindful of your noise levels

3.  Understand Restrictions on Fireworks

It is important to look up restrictions in the area before setting them off! You should read up on your state and local laws before lighting fireworks, and remember that there may be other restrictions in place as well if there is dry or windy conditions in the area. As a backup, it is best to have a hose ready to go if you need to douse your fireworks in a hurry.

4.   Display the Flag!

I have read multiple articles about people who have been told to remove a flag from their property, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Associations cannot ban the display of an American flag or a military service flag, but they can limit the size and method of display, so be sure you are familiar with your association's rules.

5. Keep an Eye on the Neighborhood Pets

Keep an eye on the neighborhood pets: more household pets are lost on the 4th of July than any other day of the year, mostly because they get easily spooked by the loud fireworks. If your pets are outside and they look like they are starting to panic, it is best to bring them inside until the fireworks are over to avoid them bolting for the nearest exit.

Now go out and buy a club pack of hot dogs, some cold drinks, and enjoy your day!
