Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the culture and history of those with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The monthlong event begins on September 15th, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

In 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15th and ending on October 15th.

This month is the perfect time to remember the vital role that Hispanic and Latino Americans have played in our country's history.  From scientists and astronauts to business leaders and politicians, Hispanic and Latino Americans have significantly contributed to all aspects of our society.

How Can You Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?

There are many ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Here are some ideas:

  • Learn about Hispanic history and culture. This can be done by reading books, watching movies or documentaries, or attending cultural events.
  • Celebrate the achievements of people in the Hispanic community. Consider supporting events or exhibits that highlight their accomplishments or simply sharing your favorite quotes or stories about them with others.
  • Support Hispanic and Latino-owned businesses. In addition to patronizing these businesses, also consider sharing their information with others, or simply leaving positive reviews online.
  • Prepare traditional Hispanic dishes.

Celebrate Diversity

No matter how you celebrate, all that matters is that you take some time this month to learn about Hispanic heritage and celebrate the many ways that Hispanic and Latino Americans have enriched our nation. It's a great way to show your support for diversity and inclusion.
